Introduction

In 2006, the government commissioned Lord Leitch to publish a report on “Prosperity for all in the Global Economy: World Class Skills”. In the report Lord Leitch sets out some ambitious goals to be reached by 2020, in order to make the UK a world leader in skills. One of the targets is to ensure more than 40% of adults are skilled to graduate level and above – up from 29% in 2005.

“The prize for achieving this new ambition is huge – a more prosperous and productive society, with higher rates of employment, and lower levels of poverty and inequality” HM Treasury, 2006.

The WYLLN has been established to help achieve this ambition. The WYLLN will respond to employers’ needs and focus on demand-led curriculum developments to enable individuals in West Yorkshire to develop the higher level skills and qualifications needed by businesses, and to realise their full potential and contribute to the economic and social prosperity of West Yorkshire.
