Business Services is the biggest employment sector within West Yorkshire and is set to grow over ten years. Financial and business services employ 100,000 employees at present. With over 104,000 employees Leeds is the 2nd largest financial city outside London.
Financial Services
This sector is a key area in terms of inward investment and employment and its skill needs are shifting too. The high level skills this industry requires are more crucial than ever if it is to increase competitiveness and boost the regional economy as a whole.
Financial & professional services includes banking, fund management, pensions, insurance, legal, accounting, management consultancy, architectural engineering and real estate
Logistics
The logistics industry turns over £75 billion per annum in the UK and employs 2.3 million people (1 in 12 working the UK). ‘Skills for Logistics’ are currently promoting the need for higher level skills within this sector by establishing formal training and development programmes. Skills gaps have been identified among junior and middle managers.
Logistics includes transport, warehousing and distribution, frieght forwarding, supply chain management.
Retail
The retail sector in West Yorkshire employs 264,010 people which accounts for 10% of the total retail workforce in England.. West Yorkshire has a lower proportion of highly qualified managers and senior officials when compared with the national average.
Retail includes: Store Operations, Buying, Customer Contact Centres, Marketing
