Open Space Event Barnsley

An exciting gathering of leaders and managers from across the Yorkshire region took place on Thursday 21st May 2009 at the University Campus Barnsley. The reason for the gathering was an Open Space Event whereby the delegates control the event and determine the topics to be discussed.
A range of senior managers, entrepreneurs, academics and other interested parties came together to discuss a number of issues which covered topics from “moral leadership and the current political crises” through to “where do leaders come from”?

The event was a follow up to an Open Space event held last year at Wakefield College.

Delegates attending the event said they found the space to discuss the issues very useful and many would take the open space ethos back to their companies to use as a management and leadership tool.

The event was jointly organised by the WYLLN Leadership, Management, Innovation and Enterprise Sector group, University of Huddersfield business school, Northern Leadership Academy, University Campus Barnsley and Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber of Commerce.

Jeff Gold of the Northern Leadership Academy lead the event and opened the floor to all delegates who then set the agenda and the ‘law of two feet’ determined whose ideas were addresses and actioned.

Following the enormous success of the event a follow up event is planned for Bradford early next year. Whilst a social network website has been set up to continue the debate in the mean time.

Curriculum Development Group Curriculum Development Group

Curriculum Development in Action.

Members of the Leadership, Management, Innovation & Enterprise Sector Group and the Health, Social Care & Early Years Sector Group have come together to begin developing a new foundation degree in the area of Social Care Management . This followed research carried out by the groups with the support of the Sector Skills Council Skills for Care that has identified this skills area as an issue for the sector.

A first meeting of the Curriculum Development Group took place at Thornes Park Campus, Wakefield College on Friday 10th October 2008.

The group included representatives from Leeds University, Leeds Metropolitan University, Bradford University, Leeds Trinity and All Saints, Calderdale College, Wakefield College, Skills for Care, Careforce, Kirklees MDC and Leeds City Council.

The contributions from the employers was considered especially crucial and the group felt that their involvement at this early stage of the process was vitally important.

Michael Cuthbert WYLLN Sector Officer said “The contributions from the employers gave a real clarity to the development of the curriculum and raised issues that otherwise might not have been considered.”

Following the initial scoping meeting the group intends to meet again in November 2008 to formulate a framework and develop a curriculum that meets the needs of the sector.
