Women Building Links - 18th June 2009, Leeds


Women Building Links network provides access to training, support and activities for women in the industry in Yorkshire.

The initiative is funded by Construction Skills, Phase 3 of the Women and Work Sector Pathways Initiative, Raising Skills and Unlocking Potential.
The initiative aims to raise recruitment levels in sectors where women are under-represented, increase earning potential and aid career progression.

‘Demonstrating approaches to sustainability in Construction & the Built Environment’.

The Construction & Built Environment sector jointly organised Green Vision with Leeds Metropolitan University’s Centre for Knowledge Exchange. Representatives from across the sector came together at the Rose Bowl to explore and discuss Sustainability issues at Green Vision 2009. Rhubarb, Rhubarb – Integreat Yorkshire - 4th June 2009

WYLLN were represented by Dr Andrew Platten, Head of School of Built Environment at Leeds Metropolitan University at the pan-professional networking event in June. Ian McMillan hosted the evening with an audience of construction and built environment practitioners taking in presentations on ‘My favourite place’. Ten informative and creative presentations each had their interpretation of the task before them.

The Construction & Built Environment Sector organised an event explaining how one college (Leeds College of Building), working in partnership with employers, local authority, schools and HEIs, has undertaken the development and delivery of the Construction & Built Environment Diploma, and is facilitating progression on from the Diploma.

The event provided an insight into the planning, development and delivery of the Diploma which will include constraints, registration, centre guidance, progression, developing consortia and much more.
The event also focused on tips, hints and lessons learnt.

A variety of organisations were represented in order to highlight the partnership approach to combine learning with practical experience. The event provided details on how learners have the chance to do part of their learning in other schools, colleges or the workplace.

Rhubarb Rhubarb - Integreat Yorkshire - 13 November 2008, Oracle Bar, Leeds

WYLLN were represented by Chris Peers of Asda*Walmart at the pan-professional networking event Rhubarb, Rhubarb in November 2008. An audience of architects, planners, engineers, surveyors and other practitioners took in presentations on ‘What does a lower carbon economy mean to me personally, professionally and regionally?’

The ten informative and creative presentations each had their own interpretation of the task set before them.

The carbon cost for the event was also worked out and pledges were requested from the participants. Pledges varied from ‘Use my car less and buy a bike’ to ‘Never work on a building that is less than BREEAM Excellent/Code for Sustainable Homes Level 4’.
