Over the last two years, WYLLN‟s AEMFC sector (Advanced Engineering and Manufacturing including Food Manufacturing and related Industrial Chemistry) has made enormous progress in expanding learning opportunities for individuals and employers within these traditional industries. Despite the decline of engineering and manufacturing in the 1960s and 70s, such industries still play a major role in the region‟s economy. Engineering Students Bid for Motorsport Glory

They're under starters’ orders. And Huddersfield University students were joined by a Formula 1 engineer as they prepared for an F1 battle of their own. The team of 34 university students launched their single-seater race car as they bid for glory at the Formula Student motorsport challenge at Silverstone. The students were joined by Red Bull Racing Formula 1 engineer Peter Hewson, once a Huddersfield University student, as they unveiled their hand built car, set to take on more than a hundred teams from other universities next weekend. The four-day event at the world famous F1 circuit pits the finest university talent from across the world against each other in a series of racing and engineering categories... TRIZ - Rapid Innovative Problem Solving

In an increasingly competitive business environment, innovation is fundamental to engineering success. For this reason, the WYLLN Staff Development Fund provided support to two Huddersfield University Lecturers, Paul Denton & Alastair McKinna, to learn more about the TRIZ methodology and further support their own Sector research and teaching. Held at the Royal Observatory in Edinburgh and organised by the IMechE and specialist consultants Oxford Creativity, the pair were welcomed to learning more about TRIZ together with Effective Problem Solving, Contradictions and Trends of Evolution, key cornerstones of the methodology... Partnership Forges a Firm Foundation for Cast Metal Engineering

A new foundation degree run by Bradford College, which aims to develop skills within the cast metal engineering industry, will start accepting students from September 2009. The new foundation degree in Castings Technology was devised by the WYLLN (West Yorkshire Lifelong Learning Network) in collaboration with several industry representatives and academic organisations. Final validation of the new degree course, which was received in June 2009, is the culmination of successful partnership working between WYLLN, Bradford College, Leeds Metropolitan University, the Institute of Cast Metal Engineers (ICME) and private casting organisations, including Newby Foundries Ltd, Goodwin Steel Castings Ltd and Chamberlin plc... Launch of Degree to Enhance Performance

Responding to industrial requirements for curriculum in Casting Technology. The Institute of Cast Metal Engineers (ICME) recently hosted the National Industry Launch of the Foundation Degree in Casting Technology on Wednesday 28th January 2009 at its headquarters in the National Metalforming Centre.
The new Foundation Degree in Castings Technology which was supported by the WYLLN is aimed at giving the students, who will be already employed in the industry and taught on a part-time basis, the technical understanding that they will need to allow them and the industry to compete and thrive into the future...Click here for the full story
Developing Student-Centred Enterprise Skills

Designing New Products for the Future

Raising Awareness of New Design Tools and Techniques through partnership with the United Kingdom’s premier Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software reseller Solid
Solutions Management, the AEMFC Sector Group recently hosted a one-day seminar on the SolidWorks design platform for a range of local companies. CAD is the use of computer technology to aid in the design and particularly the drafting (technical drawing and engineering drawing) of a new product or component part.
Held within the University of Huddersfield’s School of Computing and Engineering Design Suite, the attending delegates were presented with an introduction to the activities of the WYLLN, by Sector Officer Paul Denton, prior to receiving a hands-on awareness session on SolidWorks, led by a team of experienced Solid Solution’s trainers. The seminar held on the 16th of December, provided a fantastic opportunity for local engineering and manufacturing companies to get to grips with new design concepts and state-of-the-art software, through structured and highly-interactive, practical sessions..Click here for the full story

Members of the AEMFC Sector Group recently attended and supported the Namtec (National Metals Technology Centre) Metals Manufacturing Event which was held at
the Rotherham Advanced Manufacturing Park on the 26th November 2008.
Organised by the Special Metals Forum, this year’s event focused on skills and training. The development of industrial skills and the provision of focused training are recognised as a problem area by many different parts of the special metals sector. There are not enough young people entering the sector and those that do, often lack the required skills. The increased use of technology makes it all the more important for companies to maintain training throughout their employees' careers. The training and skills provision for the engineering sector at all levels is extremely complex, with a range of private and public organisations providing services. Building a Foundation for the Future

A lack of high level skills within engineering and manufacturing is threatening the UK’s ability to compete on a global stage in these industries. A problem exacerbated by today’s challenging economic climate. This was the consensus at a recent seminar held by the AEMFC sector group.
