Enhancing support for Higher Level Skills through the Kirklees Council Economic Development Service

In September 2009 Kirklees Council, partnered with the University of Huddersfield and Kirklees College, will embark on a project to establish a Higher Level Skills Development Coordinator based with the Skills Team within the Economic Development Service at Kirklees Council.

The overarching task of the Skills Coordinator will be to take forward the key actions/objectives of the Labour Market and Skills Strategy. Their role would be to assist the Council to co-ordinate responses to the need for higher level skills and education provision in the employers in Kirklees. In addition, they will promote the value of developing higher level skills both as a response to the recession and to ensure the district has the appropriate higher level skills for the future.

This project will have the following outcomes:

> 5 work place progression agreements
> 2 EBTA initiatives

In addition to these hard outcomes, the overall benefit of the project would be to:

> develop improved relationships between higher education providers and the business community through the work of the Council’s Economic Development Service.
> contribute to the delivery of Kirklees Council’s LAA
> contribute to the delivery of Kirklees Council’s approach to the City Region MAA
> contribute to the value added and sustainability of the emerging higher level skills infrastructure of Kirklees Council’s Economic Development Service.
