Get into Gear: Gender Equality Action Research Programme
This project is led by the UK Resource Centre for Women in SET (UKRC), an arm of Bradford College.
The aim of Get into Gear is to develop practice through action research within the WYLLN partnership to enhance engagement, retention and progression of women as non traditional learners in the sectors where they are under represented i.e. Advanced Engineering and Manufacture; Construction and the Built Environment; Digital Industries, ICT and Print and Leadership in order to enhance the experience women have in these sectors and thus facilitate engagement, retention and progression.
The programme and its outcomes will ultimately lead to the increased engagement, retention and progression of women in those sectors where they are significantly under represented.
The programme will be delivered in 3 phases:
June 2009 – Sept 2009
Phase 1: Development and engagement.
Sept 2009 – May 2010
Phase 2: Research Activity
May 2010– June 2010
Phase 3: Write up and dissemination
The programme supports the delivery of the following WYLLN objectives:
- Improve progression opportunities into and through higher education through vocational and work-based routes
- Enhance the supply and relevance of higher education provision for employers and individuals through improved institutional processes and procedures.
- Train and develop staff in support of the above objectives.
Women are significantly under represented in 5 of the 7 WYLLN sector areas. This project provides the opportunity to improve institutions processes, procedures and practices to identify and develop methods of engaging, retaining and progressing women into HE opportunities. The approach is centred on practitioners and the provision of an innovative CPD experience which will be certificated based on hours spent.
The Gender Equality Duty places a duty on all public sector organisations to actively promote equality of opportunity between men and women. This project will provide some evidence of addressing gender within project delivery.
